"THE ARREST OF GORAN HADZIC: A GOOD NEWS FOR BALKANS" - di Enrico Lastrico

On August 20 the Serbian Police arrested Goran Hadžić, the last war criminal of bloody conflict of Balkans in the nineties. The authorities of Republic of Serbia want to give, with this arrest, a message to Brusells, Serbia wants to turn over the page from its recent history. The main architect of this shift is Boris Tadic, the President of Serbia’s Republic. Tadic is a convinced European and has always worked, during his presidency, for the entry of Serbia in European Community.
Goran Hadžić was the last fugitive war criminal and committed serious crimes during the Balkan war. Populations that lived together for various years in same State, during this war, fought each other. The peoples of Yugoslavia, during the years when Tito held the power, coexisted quite peacefully. The policy of Tito, even if momentarily ensured an apparent peace, caused, among other factors, the war that broke out after the death of Marshal. Tito contrasted the cultural differences that there were between the Yugoslav citizens of various nationality, imposed the atheism and persecuted the religious. When Tito died the populations of Yugoslavia reaffirmed their different traditions and their faiths. Meanwhile Slobodan Milošević took the power, began working for the Serbian supremacy in Yugoslavia and to realize the project of Great Serbia. So the Republic that composed Federal Republic of Yugoslavia proclaimed their independence from Belgrade. The Yugoslav army intervened and the war broke out. The same things were happening in Kosovo. The existence of Yugoslavia ended February 4 2003, when the Country was renamed “Union of Serbia and Montenegro”. Subsequently Montenegro left the union and, this time, Serbia was not opposed. The war in this region ended various years ago but the wounds are still visible and there is conflict between the peoples of Balkans. All the Countries of former Yugoslavia hope to enter in the European Union. Slovenia has already entered in 2004, Croatia will enter in 2013 and various country have already signed the “Stabilisation and Association Agreement”. European Union has the opportunity to be an authoritative guide for the construction of dialogue between the various peoples that live in the Countries of region and in every Country because there are more populations with different tradition in every Balkan Country. Although Europe and International Organization intervened late to prevent the outbreak of the last conflicts, the populations of this region have still confidence in the European Community. The European Union, this time, must not betray their trust.
